NTT Research Fellowship

NTT Research Foundation has established a fellowship program for current PhD students pursuing full-time study in Biomedical Engineering or Photonics and Quantum Physics at research universities for the upcoming academic year.

The program is administered by Scholarship America,® the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of NTT Research Foundation, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team. Awards for this fellowship are granted to eligible recipients without regard to creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, or national origin.

Program Eligibility

Applicants to the NTT Research Fellowship must be currently enrolled as a full-time PhD student (3rd year or higher) in a program at one of the research universities throughout the coming academic year.

Biomedical Engineering Award

  • Georgia Institute of Technology (Biomedical Engineering PhD Program)
  • Johns Hopkins University (Biomedical Engineering PhD Program)
  • Vanderbilt University (Biomedical Engineering PhD Program)

Photonics and Quantum Physics Award

  • Harvard University (Applied Physics PhD, Quantum Science and Engineering PhD Programs)
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Electrical Engineering PhD program, Physics PhD Program)
  • Stanford University (Electrical Engineering PhD program, Applied Physics PhD Program, and Physics PhD Programs)
  • Yale University (Applied Physics PhD Program)

Be nominated by the Department Chair of each eligible program.

*Employees, and children of employees, of NTT Research, Inc. and NTT DATA, Inc. are not eligible to apply.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the following bases:*
  • Academic record,
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities,
  • Work experience,
  • Two letters of recommendation from a faculty member from a previous or current university,
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances, and
Four responses, in essay form, to the following prompts:
  • What is the intent of your research, and what inspired you to focus on this subject? (3,000 characters)
  • We are interested in gaining insights about your passions and motivations. Could you please describe events in your life that may have shaped your perspectives? Any relevant successes or achievements? Try to discuss not just where you’ve been but where you hope to go in your career. (3,000 characters)
  • How do you think that receiving this Fellowship could make an impact and help you achieve your goals? (1,000 characters)
  • Who has been your biggest influence or inspiration? (1,000 characters)

*Financial need is not considered. Recipients are selected by Scholarship America. NTT Research Foundation does not play a part in recipient selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the selection decision as final.

Awards

  • Number of awards to be granted. Up to two full-ride awards will be granted, assuming there are qualified applicants. If the applicant pool allows, one award will be granted for Biomedical Engineering, and one award will be granted for Photonics and Quantum Physics.
  • Awards coverage. Awards are intended to cover tuition, fees, books, and supplies for PhD study only. Award amounts will be determined based on the cost of attendance as determined by each recipient’s college or university, plus stipends for books and supplies. Recipients must submit their cost of attendance before each academic year. If recipients have changes to their enrollment mid-year, their award amount may be adjusted.
  • Renewability. Awards are renewable up to three years or until a PhD is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance and continued full-time enrollment in an eligible program at an eligible university.
  • Living stipend. Recipients may be offered a living stipend through NTT Research Foundation.
  • Optional internship. Recipients may be offered an optional internship with NTT Research, Inc.
  • Notification. All applicants will be notified in July of the application year.
  • Payment of scholarships. Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of NTT Research Foundation. Payments are made in August and mid-December.

Required Application Materials

As part of your application, you must upload the following materials:

  • Transcript. A current, complete transcript of grades from undergraduate through present. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course, and term in which each course was taken.
  • Acceptance letter. An acceptance letter, verifying acceptance to an eligible program and an eligible university.
  • 2 letters of recommendations. Two letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically on your behalf. Recommendations must be completed by a faculty member from a previous or current university.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
